DIY Felt Flowers – Free Printable Template

I love making DIY felt flowers – they are more durable than crepe paper flowers (although of course less realistic) and look so good! You can see how I’ve turned similar flowers into a DIY felt flower wreath, or scroll down for this tutorial. Disclosure: this post contains affiliate links.

Flower making is one of my favorite 3D crafts to do – they are so pretty, versatile, and have a fun end result!

These DIY felt flowers are quite different from others I’ve featured before. These are flat, and are appropriate for attaching to a hair clip, turning into a wreath, or mounting onto any flat surface.

If you’d like something to put in a vase, you can check out this felt flower template. You can also check out these felt flowers – a much larger scale project.

To make these felt flowers, I highly recommend going for soft, thick felt. This will allow you to create a more durable, solid flower, and since this template was designed with that in mind, it’ll work better.

I also recommend using a mini hot glue gun as your glue of choice. Mini because you’ll have more control than you would with a full-sized one. You also want this to bond quickly and a mini glue gun is the best choice for that.

What you need to make DIY felt flowers:

How to make DIY felt flowers:

1. Prepare the patterns from the template by printing and cutting them out. Trace the petal shapes on the felt selected for the flower. Trace the round (base), spiral and the rectangular shapes on yellow felt or any color felt you feel is appropriate. Trace the leaf shapes on green felt. Cut them out.

2. Cut 1cm slits on the bottom of your petals.

3. Overlap the sides of the slit and glue them together using a hot glue gun. This will give the petal a slightly cupped shape.

4. Repeat with all your petals.

5. Take the rectangular and the spiral pattern.

Fold the rectangular pattern into half  the long way and cut thin, even fringe along the closed end of the fold. Don’t cut all the way through! Take the spiral pattern and start coiling it from its outer end towards the center. When you reach the center glue it shut.

6. Now wrap and glue the fringed rectangle around the coiled spiral.

7. Take the felt circle and place it on a flat surface. Glue a petal near the outer edge.

8. Now glue 3 more petals one by one, around the outer edge of the round base.

9. Glue the rest of the petals (4 more petals) near the center of the round base.

10. Now glue the center of the flower that you completed in step 6.

11. If you’d like, glue a bead to the center of the flower. Glue leaves to the bottom of the flower.
