Sometimes when I try to make a craft it fails. I experiment, get it right, and only then I share it.

Sometimes I’m ready and excited to share a craft, have it photographed, edited, etc. and then suddenly I realize that it won’t work.

That’s what happened with these DIY flip flops.

Now, before you click away, I DID figure out a way to make this work…

Basically, I wanted to update some dollar store flip flops with chain. I thought it would be cool to have the strap be a chain, but I knew that would be terribly uncomfortable. So I figured I’d use glue to add the chain.

I experimented with two types of glue and settled on E6000. Wham.

The problem? The paint came off. with the chain and glue attached.

So my original concept worked, only when I decided to go a step further and add some spots of color, it backfired.

So I’m still sharing these DIY flip flops with you, because the chain looks really cool, but I’m warning you, if you want it to last don’t paint it first!

Or paint it and leave off the chain… but if I were you, I’d choose the chain over the paint.

Anyway, I may or may not have time before I publish this post to redo it and photograph it without the color added, but in case I don’t, you’ve been warned!

Now for the tutorial.

How to make DIY flip flops:

A 3-step craft?! You’d better believe it!

Step 1: Glue your chain down in the center. Measure up against the strap how long you need it, and trim to size.

Step 2: Glue your chain down on each side.

Step 3: Use clips or clothespins to clamp it down in place until it’s set, but not totally dry – you don’t want to glue on the clips! About half an hour should be enough to stop it from sliding.

  1. I took a dollar store pair of yellow flip flops, painted the straps and the soles with Gold Glitter paint and added a Yellow flower to the strap between the toes by poking a hole and using a brad to hold the flower in place. (So where you started to glue your chain is where I put the flower) I got the yellow flowers at the same dollar store. They came out really cute. I am going to make some more in different colors.
