For Y’s sixth birthday about a year ago, we did a LEGO themed birthday party. We had actually already done that theme for M many years ago, but it was a good one, and Y wanted it too.
There were so many things that we switched up, so I’ll try to share them with you here. First: the party favors! We made a DIY LEGO keychain for each kid. It was incredibly easy, with professional results that didn’t feel overly DIY.
It literally takes minutes to put together!
To make each DIY LEGO keychain, you’ll want to basically melt a hole in a strategic spot of a LEGO brick or plate and stick a keychain on. It’s that simple.
I used LEGO bricks leftover from various things that I had purchased loose bricks for (such as our DIY LEGO reward chart for kids). I even found one that had a hole in the top already and just slipped a ball chain through it.
These DIY LEGO keychains aren’t just fabulous birthday party favors. They make quick and easy fundraisers, Etsy shop fillers, and gifts to hand out to students or other large groups. Since the final result is polished and it’s a fan favorite type of item, it has a premium look. but you can make a pile of them in under an hour.
So let’s get crafting!
What you’ll need
- LEGO bricks in any shape or size (well, maybe not 1 peg rounds) – You can get a classic set, or check ebay for lots of loose bricks
- Jump rings – I did use eye pins on some, but jump rings are ideal – check the ones that came with your keychains first to see if they are large enough
- Keychains
- Heat tool (a wood burning tool with a tip dedicated to plastic is perfect – since it’ll get a bit messed up from the melted plastic.) Adults only, obviously!
- Pliers to open and close your jump ring
How to make a DIY LEGO Keychain
1. Locate a good spot toward the top to make a hole. It should be far enough from an edge to not be easily breakable but close enough to allow for a jump ring to slide through.
On the flat 1×4 plates, I simply did it through the top hole.
Slowly touch your heated up tool to the spot where you want to make your hole, and let it melt through.
2. Slide your jump ring through the hole.
3. Attach a key ring. You’re done! (You can see that I used a head pin on this one – I don’t recommend that method.)
