Get into the Independence Day spirit with this fun, easy wreath! I always find it so fun passing by doors that are decorated for the season.
Wreaths are a classy, simple way to share an air of celebration. Best of all, patriotism doesn’t really go out of style so you can put this up as far in advance as you’d like and leave it up after July 4th as well.
You can make this project in about a half hour using supplies you either have at home or can easily get from the dollar store. It’s a great way to repurpose a puzzle that has already lost some pieces, instead of throwing it out.
If you don’t have one of those sitting around, Dollar Tree sells puzzles so cheaply that it doesn’t even feel wasteful using them for crafts. Other than that, all you need is paper, string, and an empty box.
This activity is perfect for teens or tweens, and even younger kids can enjoy helping out with some supervision. I used a hot glue gun, but if you have a child helping out you can try using any strong glue, such as tacky glue (just remember that will need to be left alone until it sets, unlike hot glue which is ready almost instantly).
You can check out my favorite hot glue guns for crafting if you don’t yet own one.
The only other part they’re likely to need a hand with is getting into the center of the star to cut out, which I did with a craft knife. I used thin cardboard, such as an empty cereal box, which is easier to cut. The puzzle pieces have enough strength to hold the shape once they’re glued together, so you don’t need to use thick corrugated cardboard for the base.
What you’ll need

How to make a Dollar Tree 4th of July Wreath
1. Cover your work surface. Paint the puzzle pieces with blue craft paint. Let dry and add a second coat of paint if necessary.
2. Cut out the star wreath pattern from the template. Trace it onto your cardboard and cut it out. We recommend using scissors for the outside and a craft knife for the inside. Paint the base if you’d like.
3. Use the glue gun to randomly attach puzzle pieces to the star wreath base.
4. Use the glue gun (adults only) to stick a second layer of puzzle pieces on top of the first layer. Vary the directions of the pieces to make the shape look random and organic.
5. Measure and cut out a rectangle of white cardstock 1” x 7”. Use scissors to cut a notch in each end.
Punch or cut two 1 ½” circles from red card stock and two 1” circles from blue cardstock. Layer the circles on top of the white rectangle banner and glue them in place. Stick one of the USA letters onto each circle. If you don’t have suitable stickers, you can write the letters yourself with a white paint marker. Accent the banner with rhinestones or glitter glue according to your taste.
Use the glue gun to attach the banner with the letters to the star wreath.
6. Measure and cut a 12” length of red twine or string and attach it to the back of the wreath to use as a hanger.
