I love a good imaginative craft, and these mini DIY fairy doors score!

I don’t know about you, but I’m always trying to get my kids outdoors, and sometimes adding something creative to the mix can really help.

Take a nature walk and place these fanciful fairy doors at the base of a tree to ignite someone’s imagination! You or your children can create these doors using basic supplies that can be found at home or at the dollar store – it’s quick and easy, too!

If you’re doing this craft with early learners, you can reinforce their learning by having them count out the sticks and arrange them into shapes – the instructions include a rectangle shape and the letter Z, for starters.

Of course, as with most crafts, you’ll also be building their eye-hand coordination and following directions skills.

This is also a great craft to let your creativity flow – I’ve suggested some of my favorite fairy-like colors and accents, but you can go anywhere you want with this. Add any decorations or designs that you think your favorite fairy would like on their home! You can use supplies you have at home, such as markers, string, or scraps. Or you can let the dollar store inspire you with any small findings.

Just don’t forget the sparkles! Every fairy loves to twinkle. I’ve used glitter paint, but you can also use glitter glue, regular glue with glitter sprinkled on top (if you’re really brave), sequins, or craft gems.

For all the glue and paint, make sure to use thin layers so it dries quickly and evenly. It’s better and quicker to apply a second or even third coat that dries well, rather than waiting for one thicker coat to dry.

Have fun finding places to put your finished fairy doors. They can be used to decorate your own garden, or you can put them in a public place as a visual treat for whoever comes across them!

What you’ll need

How to make the fairy door craft

1. For the rectangular door, line up 6 jumbo craft sticks on your work surface. Attach them together by gluing three regular sticks across them in a “Z” shape.

For the rounded door, line up 6 jumbo craft sticks on your work surface and arrange them so the sticks go farther up toward the center. Glue two regular craft sticks horizontally across near the top and bottom.

2. Make sure the glue is dry and then paint the doors with acrylic craft paint. Let them dry, and apply a second coat if necessary.

3. Make sure the paint is dry and then apply a coat of iridescent glitter paint. You can also use glitter glue spread in a thin layer, or regular glue with glitter sprinkled on top.

Let it dry and apply a second coat if desired.

4. Glue a button doorknob to each door.
