DIY Gift Idea for Men: Color Blocked Twine Flash Drive
I needed a good DIY gift idea for men that wouldn’t cost me more than a few pennies, and would use mostly what I already had. I found some promotional flash drives that were given to me with media kits pre-loaded, that I did not need anymore. I decided to see if I could turn them into something fresh, new, and totally “giftable” – and that’s who these color blocked twine flash drives were born!
At first, I decided simply to wrap these flash drives with twine. They were pretty enough, but were lacking something. So I dipped them in navy blue paint that I had left over from this project, and loved how it came out!
The texture of the twine does show through the paint – which is what I wanted. I added a string too for convenience. The string is “adjustable” as the beads are pretty tight, so they can be slid further down to shorten the string.
I will be giving them in these boxes that house it generously, but not awkwardly so.
The entire craft takes no longer than a few active minutes. You do need to do it a couple of days in advance of when you’ll need it, as it does require drying time. But you can make many to give out to lots of people, and it will take you very little time.
What you need to make this gift idea for men:

- Flash drive (if it’s a promotional, format it before using it.)
- Twine
- Blue paint
- E6000 glue
- A wooden bead with a large hole
- Paper towel
- Scissors
How to make a twine flash drive gift idea for men:
1. Apply some E6000 glue on each side of the flash drive.
2. Start wrapping from the beginning, adding more glue as needed. Make sure to keep your wrap tight!
3. Wrap until the end. Make sure to glue the end securely in place.
4. Once your glue has dried, dip your flash drive (the top, of course) into paint.
5. Wipe off any excess with a paper towel (do this carefully so as not to ruin the clean line) and leave it to dry completely.
6. When it’s dry, make sure the hanging loop on your flash drive is clear from paint (you may need to scrape some away.) String a long piece of twine through it.
7. String both ends through a bead together.
8. Knot the end of your twine and trim it.
Your flash drive is ready to gift!
Too funny, and they’ll probably think it is a joke, until you tell them it actually works! Great idea Menucha, thanks for sharing on craft schooling Sunday!
