Corner bookmarks are a simple little origami project that can be put to good use, either for yourself or to gift to a fellow book-lover. They’re so easy and fun to make, you’ll want to share with everyone!

In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to make corner bookmarks by folding paper so that it fits neatly over the edge of the book you’re reading, or some other paper you’d like to mark. But that’s only the beginning – once you finish the paper folding, you can have fun decorating the bookmark in all kinds of ways!

One way to make the corner bookmarks cool is to simply color on the paper in a nice design. Try using an intricate coloring page as the paper for the bookmark and color that in for an easy design. Or you can make your own picture or doodle directly onto the bookmark using pencils, pens, markers, or whatever you like.

Make these out of abstract watercolor designs, paper collages, or any flat art.

Another option is to use tape or glue to attach a decoration. I would recommend using paper or other flat, lightweight materials (perhaps feathers) to decorate since you want the bookmark to be easy to use and stay on the page easily.

Meanwhile, the basics are a perfect place to start. Using only these instructions and ANY paper of your choice, you can already make a functional clever bookmark. If you want your bookmark to be extra pretty with no extra effort, consider choosing a colored or patterned origami paper or scrapbook paper to make it out of. Get some paper and let’s go!

What you’ll need

How to make corner bookmarks

1. Start with a square sheet of paper. If your paper is rectangular, fold one corner diagonally to the opposite edge and trim off the excess paper to form a square.

2. Fold the paper diagonally in half to form a triangle. Make sure the edges align neatly, and make a firm crease along the folded edge.

3. Position the triangle with the point facing down/toward you. Take the corner on your left and fold it down to the bottom point.

4. Now take the corner on your right and fold it down to the bottom point.

5. Open the last two folds, bringing you back to the triangle shape.

6. Take the top layer of paper from the tip of the triangle and fold it up to meet the diagonal creases.

7. Fold the left corner down to the middle again.

8. Fold the right corner down to the middle again.

9. Tuck the flap on the right into the pocket formed between the two layers of the triangle.

10. Tuck the flap on the left into the pocket on its own side.

OK, you’ve successfully finished the origami part of this bookmark! Now you can decide whether to continue with some decorations or go ahead and use it right away. To use the bookmark, slide the pocket over the corner of a page to mark your spot.
