Mermaid notebooks are fun and easy to craft, and go perfectly with mermaid pencil toppers! This is the perfect end-of-summer craft, as it’s a fusion of summery, beachy vibes and a functional school supply.

Craft these as part of a tween’s mermaid themed birthday party. You can either create these as a party activity and craft, or make them in advance as DIY party favors.

If you’re making these at a birthday party, make sure to craft it on individual paper plates. Write the participant’s name on the plate so that if it’s not dry on time, they can still easily take it home.

I also recommend making it as part of the first activity of the party – so that there is time for it to dry at least partially.

The bright, pastel colors on these mermaid notebooks can be swapped out for any color scheme, but these give a fabulous cheerful vibe, that’s just full of sunshine.

And while these are mini notebooks, which make it easier to do at a party, you can use this same tutorial to make DIY school supplies at home for the back to school season. Swap out full sized composition notebooks to use in class.

And while you can use a glue gun if you want something super fast-drying, I do recommend using fabric glue as that has worked successfully and won’t give you bumps or glue strings to contend with.

What you need

How to Make a Mermaid Notebook

1. Remove the mini composition books and the craft felt sheets from their packaging. Apply fabric glue to front cover of composition book, and then spread out evenly with your fingertip. Place the glued composition book on top of felt craft sheet, lining up the edges.

2. Apply fabric glue to the back cover of the composition book and spread out evenly with your fingertip. Fold felt craft sheet over into the glue, making sure that the edges line up. Set aside to dry with a heavy book placed on top. This will allow the cardboard covers of the composition book to dry flat.

3. Once dry, carefully trim away the excess craft felt with scissors. Trim the straight edges as well as the rounded corners of each mini composition book. Younger kids might need help with this step.

4. Accent the Mermaid Mini Notebooks with a coordinating color of glitter glue. Draw on rows of scalloped scales. Set aside to allow glitter glue to dry. Place composition books on a piece of scrap cardboard, so they are easier for the kids to transfer.
