Origami Dove of Peace

Sharing is caring!

Craft this gorgeous origami dove of peace using the step by step tutorial. When you’re done this, you’ll want to try an origami whale too! This post contains affiliate links.

This origami dove tutorial is one of my favorites as it is simply beautiful. The simple, elegant silhouette is just so classy (yes, I did just call a bird classy.)

And the meaning and symbolism behind the dove is that of peace.

This origami dove of peace can be created as a 3 dimensional element to add to many different types of projects. Here are just a few ideas of what you can create with this:

  • Ornaments: Simply back it with stiff paper and/or secure it in strategic locations and add a string to hang it from.
  • Cards: I have glued origami to the fronts of cards in the past to add some dimension to an otherwise flat card! This one can be used as a non-specific winter holiday or Rosh Hashanah greeting.
  • Garlands: We have also used origami to make garlands in the past. This one would be so cool as a garland, since the birds would appear to be “flying”. You may want to rope in some help if you’re making a lot of these.

Of course these are just a few ideas – I’m sure you can think of more!

Want to add an extra little touch to your origami doves? Cut an “olive branch” from a scrap of crepe paper and glue it onto its mouth. You can also paint it with pearly white paints, add a tiny dab of pink glitter glue for the cheek, or make it special however you’d like.

Origami Dove Instructions

1. Start with a square sheet of paper.

2. Fold the paper in half diagonally.

3. Fold it in half diagonally again.

4. Your paper now has has 2 triangle flaps. Take the top flap and fold it back, in half.

5. Flip your paper over.

6. Fold the flap on this side in half as well.

7. Fold the top point of your triangle down so that it meets the center of the bottom side.

8. Unfold the last fold, leaving a crease.

9. Unfold the flap of the side you’re working on. Notice the 90 degree crease lines.

10. Fold the paper along the horizontal crease and flatten it down.

11. Fold in the middle line (the diagonal crease between the 90 degree crease lines).

12. Now fold and flatten the vertical crease.

13. Turn the paper to the other side and fold the flap like you did on the other side.

14. The paper should now have 3 flaps. Fold out a flap.

15. Turn the paper over and fold out the other flap. These flaps are the wings of our origami dove.

16. Rotate and bring the wings to the top side.

17. We’ll work on the right side – the side aligned with the diagonal edge of the center triangle. Fold that side along the diagonal edge.

18. Fold out the open side of the folded part and align it with its outer edge.

19. Unfold the last 2 folds, they should leave creases.

20. Keep the center crease on top, fold-in the creases on the sides.

21. This is how the tail should look like from the top.

22. Flatten the tail against the paper, so that it shows up the same on the front and the back.

23. Fold the other end (left) of the paper in half. This will form the beak of the origami dove.

24. Unfold the last fold.

25. Open the bottom of your two sides.

26. Invert that top crease and flatten to form the beak of the origami dove.

You can use a marker to draw the eyes of the dove and to add any details you’d like.
