A few months ago, I shared a free star crochet pattern and today, I’m sharing a new one that uses three colors and can be made in red, white, and blue – perfect for 4th of July.
These crochet stars can be used to make all sorts of fun accessories and decor for Independence Day celebrations:
- String a few together as a garland
- Use it as-is under a cold drink
- Sew it onto an elastic to use as a hairband
- Attach it to a barrette or pony tail holder
The possibilities are endless!
And while this tutorial uses red white and blue yarn for a patriotic design, you can use any combination of strings you want for any effect.
What you need for this patriotic crochet stars pattern
- Crochet hook – 2.5 mm
- Yarn – medium or medium-light
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
How to crochet patriotic stars
1. Start with a slip knot, chain 4 and then form a ring.

4. Chain 1 and work a single crochet into the same stitch we slipped stitched into.
5. Work 2 single crochet into each of the next stitches until all stitches are covered.
6. When the hook reaches the 1st stitch of the current round, take a contrasting yarn and use it to work a slip stitch to start the next round.
7. Work 7 chain stitches.
8. Skip the first chain and then work a slip stitch into the 2nd to last stitch.
9. Work a single crochet into the next stitch.
10. Work a half double crochet into the next stitch.
11. Work a double crochet into the next stitch.
12. Work a treble crochet into the next stitch.
13. Skip 2 chains from the previous color and work a slip stitch into the 3rd stitch.
14. Work another slip stitch into the next stitch and then work 7 chains.
15. Repeat step 8 to step 14.
16. These are the points of our crochet star. Repeat until all 5 points are formed.
17. Done creating the 5 points? Work a slip stitch using the second color of yarn that you used through the last chain stitch of the current color.
18. Work single crochet all around the crochet star to create a border.
19. Done creating the border? Work a slip stitch and draw the yarn to the reverse.
20. Use a tapestry needle to stitch the remaining ends of each of the yarns to secure them. Cut off extra yarns if necessary.
