Sure the weather is nice, the flowers are blooming, and school is out – but the best part of summer is that it’s always a good time for ice cream and popsicles! Here’s a nice, easy popsicle craft to keep you thinking cool thoughts as the sun warms up outside.

Hang this cute popsicle on your wall or door to welcome summer! You can also use it to decorate a notebook cover or refrigerator magnet. Your kids can serve them up to their dolls or puppets at a fun pretend play party.

Yarn wrapping is a relaxing technique to make chic designs. You can get a whole different look depending what colors you use – try making one with colors in the same family, such as lighter and darker pinks, and then try making one with contrasting colors and see how different the effect is – and both beautiful!

The instructions for this craft recommend using a glue gun. The advantage of glue guns is that they dry almost instantly and can stick to soft materials like yarn. If you want to do this craft with small children and you are concerned about the heat of the glue gun, you have a couple of options:

  • You can glue the first end of the yarn for them, it cools off really quickly, and then they can do the wrapping and come back to you to glue the end in place.
  • Or, you can use tacky glue, but they’ll have to pinch the yarn in place for a few minutes until the glue sets to make sure it holds. Clothespins can help with this.

If you’re using liquid glue, you can also wrap the yarn overlapping a few times to help make sure the end of the yarn doesn’t fall off in case the glue doesn’t hold well.

I’ve included instructions for the basic popsicle craft, but you can extend the activity by adding embellishments such as pom-poms (think about a cherry on top?) or perhaps sprinkles made with a hole punch and colored paper

For a really whimsical twist, you can even pop on some wiggly eyes and give your ice cream some personality!

What you’ll need

How to make this popsicle craft

1. Draw an arch shape on the cardboard and cut it out (for a simpler craft, you can cut a rectangle). Use a pencil to draw horizontal lines dividing it into four sections.

2. Glue the end of the first color of yarn to the top of the cardboard cutout shape. Wrap it around and around the cardboard, with minimal overlapping so that the yarn gradually covers more of the cardboard. Switch off colors when you’re ready.

Note: the arch portion might be harder. You can pre-cut string and trim the ends instead of wrapping, or work on an outline of tacky glue. A rectangle popsicle might be easier to wrap.

When you get to the first pencil line, stop wrapping, glue, cut off the remaining yarn, and glue the end in place. Take a second color of yarn and glue the starting end next to the end you just finished.

Repeat until the entire cardboard shape is covered. Add embellishments if desired.

3. Glue the craft stick in the center of the arch, sticking out of the flat bottom.

Your popsicle craft is complete! Now try it in another size or shape.
