How to Salvage Grainy Photos
Doesn’t it frustrate you when your favorite photos come out grainy and, well, awful?!! I have partnered with BeFunky to share with you a favorite way to salvage grainy photos that make them look just like art.
That’s because… I turn them into art!
This also works when you have a photo that’s too small that you need to “enlarge” – but you don’t want to the pixels to start showing.
Why your photos come out grainy:
There are a number of reasons this happens to me:
- My focus is slightly off
- Conditions are too dark
- When I try to get rid of shadows in the photo, I lose some pixel information
Usually the above happens in less-than-ideal photography situations, which means, of course, that it happens to my favorite photos. The shots I got of my boys in the low-light setting at my brother’s Bar Mitzvah. The one of M chasing bubbles. All those photos where he decides to jump enthusiastically for the shot.
Those make the best photos because they are of the best moments, and they are real. But because of the challenges in those moments, they often come out grainy, and I’m stuck. I bumped into this issue while collecting photos for a canvas collage we were making for my parents. Adding an artistic effect really helps turn it around.
Why turning photos into art helps salvage grainy photos:
When you use BeFunky Photo To Art Effects to turn photo into art, they are smoothing out your photos in a way that gives it the impressionist value of art. So you’re taking the flaws of your photo and making it work for you! For example, the photo of my boys above would now make a beautiful wall hanging for above the couch in our home.
Looks like oil on canvas, doesn’t it? Plus, it takes seconds and you need absolutely NO skills to do it. It’s a perfect way to compensate for any lost pixel information in your photos.
It’s also a great way to upgrade your best images – not just the ones that turned out wrong. Canvas mounts are so popular these days – make them look more authentic with an oil paint effect! Frame photos that look like commissioned artwork, and give your whole album a uniform look by adding an effect to the photos.

Which effects to use when:
When you plan to hang it in your family room –
Go for traditional arts! BeFunky remastered an array of their most popular Artsy effects and just released their new Deluxe Edition Digital Art Effects. They allow you to turn your art into an oil painting, watercolor, pop art, and more – all in one click!
Pretend it’s real art when choosing your finish: Turn it into watercolor if you’ll print on card, matte, and frame. Make it an oil painting if you’re working with canvas.
When you want to create an album –
Whether it’s digital or printed, do something fun! Cartoonize photos using the first effect BeFunky created! Make it fun and interesting. Play with the strength of the effect, depending on how far you want to stray from the original.
For garlands, collages, and multiple photos together –
Which effect you choose doesn’t matter as much, but choose one and stick to it! That way you can turn diverse photos into one cohesive piece of art.
For photo cards or small framed photos –
You can really choose whichever one you want. Choose one that suits the mood. Are you sending out elegant baby thank you cards? Go for an ink wash. Are you aiming for something more upbeat? Pop Art is the way to go!
I hope you have fun and salvage grainy photos by the dozen! Don’t give up on your favorite smiles! Even the worst photos can be turned around!
