In previous months, I’ve shared crochet tutorials for various flowers. I’ve already taught you how to crochet sunflowers and I shared a free daisy crochet pattern too.

But I didn’t share the simplest tutorial of all.

So even though Spring has long passed, it’s about time I share these simple crocheted flowers with a super easy pattern for beginners.

Skip to:

There are two crochet skills used in this simple crocheted flower tutorial:

  • How to crochet a ring
  • How to work single crochet into a ring
  • Chain crochet

Crocheting chains are such a basic skill that by the time you want to crochet real projects, you should be able to do it in your sleep.

Not only that, I believe that all crafters who like to have a general crafting skill set should be able to crochet chain, even if they don’t actually crochet. It can be incorporated in other projects such as jewelry making and trims for leather crafts.

Since these simple crocheted flowers are heavy on the chain crochet, they’re a fabulous craft for anyone!

Since this a functional crochet tutorial, you can use it in all sorts of finished projects. The petals are somewhat soft and loose, so you’ll want to use these in a project where your petals can be tacked down. Some ideas include:

  • Hair accessories, such as on a wide headband
  • Appliques on hats, gloves, scarves…
  • Appliques on t-shirts and jeans
  • Embellish totes
  • Or even add a bit of texture to paper craft projects!

Think outside the box with this free pattern for simple crocheted flowers!

How to make simple crocheted flowers

1. Select a yarn for the center part of the flower. In this tutorial, I’ll be using yellow yarn. Start with a slip knot and then work 5 chain stitches (CH).

2. Form a ring with the 5 chains by working a slip stitch (SL ST) through the first chain stitch.

3. Chain 1 and then work 10 to 12 single crochet (SC) through the center of the ring. The number of single crochet around the ring will be the number of petals for the crochet flower. Finish the SC round with a slip stitch through the initial stitch of the SC round. Pull out an inch of the yarn on the hook and then cut off the yarn from the skein. Pull the loose tail of the yarn to the reverse of your project.

4. Select a yarn for the petals. We’re using pink yarn for this. Create a slip knot with the selected yarn. Draw the hook through the top of any one of the SC stitches that you worked into your flower.

5. Pull out the slip knot through the stitch and then work 1 chain.

6. Work 10 more chain stitches. For each petal we will work 10 CH.

7. Now, pull the yarn through the next stitch of the ring.

8. Work 10 CH again. Complete this second petal as you did the first – pulling it through the next CH of your center circle.

9. Continue to work the petals by repeating 10 CH and then pulling the 10th stitch through the next stitch of the ring.

10. After reaching the first petal, work a slip stitch through that first petal’s first stitch (that went through the yellow ring) and then pull out 2 inches of the yarn. Cut off yarn from the skein by keeping roughly 2 inches extra as a “tail”.

11. Use the tapestry needle to stitch the tail/loose yarn on the reverse of the flower pattern. Stitch the tail you left from the yellow center to secure that as well. Your simple crocheted flowers are complete!
