What to do with your finished small leaf crochet pattern

This project is best crafted as an element for larger projects! Here are some ideas, but I’m sure you’ll have more. So many people reached out to me with the cool ways they finished off their crochet sunflowers – I can’t wait to see what you come up with these crocheted leaves.

  • Use them alone or with any of my crochet flowers!
  • Use a wire to turn them into a wreath for the door – or the head!
  • Or glue them onto a headband.
  • Use as appliques for backpacks, handbags, or apparel.
  • Attach to pony tail holders or barettes for cool hair accessories.
  • Use them in actual stemmed flower creations.

Leaves are just such a wonderful touch of nature, and crocheting them gives them texture…

The leaves here were made in shades of green. Make them in fall colors for an autumnesque vibe. Make them in whichever color you have in your scrap stash for a fantastical touch.

  • Half Double Crochet
  • Single Crochet
  • Slip stitch

What you need

How to crochet a small leaf

1. Choose your yarn. Start with a slip knot.

2. Work 10 chain stitches.

3. Skip 3 chains from the hook and find the 4th chain stitch.

4. Work a Double Crochet (DC) into the 4th chain.

5. Work 2 more DC into the same chain stitch, making it 3 DC in the 4th of the base chain.

6. Work a DC into the next chain stitch.

7. Work 1 DC into the each of the next 2 chain stitches.

8. Work a Half Double Crochet into the next chain stitch.

9. Now, work a Single Crochet into the next chain stitch.

10. Then, work a slip stitch into the last chain.


11. Now, work 2 chain stitches.


12. Work another slip stitch into the same chain that you slip stitched before.


13. Work a Single Crochet into the next chain stitch.


14. Work a Half DC into the next chain stitch.


15. Work 1 DC into the each of the next 3 chain stitches.


16. Work 3 DC into the next chain stitch.


17. Insert the hook through the 3rd border chain stitch that you formed on the perimeter of the other side of the leaf.


18. Work a slip stitch into that chain.


19. Work 4 chains.


20. Insert the hook through the 3rd chain from the hook.


21. Work a SC into that 3rd chain from the hook.


22. Work another SC into the next chain.


23. Work a slip stitch into any nearby stitch and pull out the yarn.


24. Leave a couple of inches yarn hanging and then cut off the project from the skein. Flip over the crochet leaf and use a tapestry needle to secure the loose tail of yarn on the reverse.
