Paper lanterns are fun to display – they are simple to craft using a free template, and they can be adapted to any holiday! These sweet house-shaped valentine paper lantern have a cut out heart, a shape that you can switch out seasonally.
To keep it safe to use, a battery-operated LED light or candle is used.
Place a single one on a mantel or sideboard, or make a few to display as a “village”. Make them simply, like this one, or embellish them, just like this gingerbread house craft.
Kids can color these if they’d like, and it’s a great, simple cutting craft! It’s also pretty enough for grown ups and teens who like simple paper crafts.

What you need to to make a valentine paper lantern:
- Construction paper
- Card stock (white was used in this tutorial)
- Glittery foam sheet
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Glue
- LED candle
How to make a valentine paper lantern:
1. Use cardstock paper or thick craft paper to make the house. Cut out the parts of your template. Set the small heart template aside and trace the larger heart on colored paper. Trace the long part of the roof on cardstock paper and the 2 smaller halves on the glittery foam sheet. Trace the house template on card stock and cut out.
2. Trace the small heart pattern on main house, making sure to trace it right in the middle of the front of the house.
3. Carefully cut out the traced heart pattern from the house layout, using a craft knife if you need it.
4. Now take the big colored heart, and apply glue around the sides.
5. Carefully place the glued side of the heart on the heart hole of the house, to cover it. Press the sides to make sure that the heart is attached securely.
6. Fold the house layout along the incomplete lines as shown in the template.
7. Apply glue along the smallest “panel”/the tab, and attach it to the opposite end to close the sides of the house. The house base is ready. Time to make the roof!
8. Fold the full roof base portion in half and glue the 2 glittery sheets on each side of the roof base.
9. Apply glue along the top edge of the house structure and place the roof on top to complete the house. Press the parts to make sure that the house and the roof are joined securely.
10. Turn on the LED candle and place the house on the top of it. Looks adorable and magical doesn’t it?

This is actually an easy craft to make & a different kind of valentine craft! That’s what makes it so appealing to create. I will be helping (teaching) my 12 yr old grandson how to make this for his mom’s valentine gift. He already likes crafting, as does his little sister. He likes crafts like this one that aren’t complex, otherwise he gets frustrated & gives up. AND it’s not a too ‘girly’ type craft so he will WANT to make it to begin with. His crafts must pass the not-too-girly criteria (!). Anyway, bottomline, he would enjoy making it. After he does, I will post a picture of his valentine house lantern on my pinterest page. Actually, it can be adapted to have other ‘window’ shapes too, which makes it even more appealing. A special great big THANK YOU for publishing this tutorial!! 😊
